And The Tip Slip

Just when I thought we’d get out of this season nice and peacefully, riding out a wave of mind numbing, lazy comedy like last week’s episode, along comes ‘And the Tip Slip’, which certainly can make its case for the single worst half hour of comedy in 2013. It’s almost commendable how terrible ‘Tip Slip’ is, a script that boils down to a single penis joke, painfully stretched out over 22 minutes, throwing all of its characters under the bus along the way.

The penis in question belongs to Caroline’s father, who asks his daughter to defend him against a woman claiming she slept with him and saw his small penis. This plot point takes a few minutes to get across, because what is a scene with a male character without Max trying to sleep with them? After a few minutes of euphemisms and the gross sight of a woman trying to have sex with her best friend’s felon father, he finally reveals to her that he doesn’t care if he’s defended against all the shit he did wrong – as long as people knew he had a massive cock, everything would be good.

From there, it’s just a bunch of penis jokes. Max gets her hands on a picture of Martin’s dick, which leads to her staring at it a lot. Everyone makes jokes about Han having a small penis (because he’s Asian HAHAHAHA), and then Oleg talks about how he can cup and tickle his balls at the same time (he also has a Google penis alert set, so he can keep up on the trends). Sophie comes into some applause (WHYYY), and makes some more dick jokes I didn’t even bother writing down – and then Earl makes a reference to his dick being bigger, because of course they would.

It all leads to a wonderfully contrived Piers Morgan cameo, who delivers his lines like he was asleep, although he’s supposed to be like his usual talk show host self. The girl Martin slept with is discredited when its revealed that Martin has a big penis, and all is forgotten. There is a brief moment where Caroline asks if she’ll have to defend her father forever – but it’s immediately tossed aside for more penis and Max wanting to have sex with Martin.

What is the point of all this? To reinforce that Caroline’s an idiot, and still hasn’t entered a reality where her father isn’t perfect? Martin’s entire character in this episode comes down to his dick size, and the girl who wrote a book about the man who robbed hundreds of people gets tossed aside, insulted in national television by a man who dismisses her for daring to lie about a man’s penis size. If it’s supposed to be a moral victory, it’s certainly an empty one – and if it’s supposed to represent anything for anyone’s character, all it does is remind us what a poorly written pair of characters Max and Caroline are, characterizations that are growing more inconsistent and thrown away with each episode.

I was wondering if I spoke too soon when I said the 2 Broke Girls writers had already thrown in the towel for the season, but ‘Tip Slip’ just reinforces the notion that nobody gives a shit anymore what they’re writing. They’ve given up on even the broadest characterizations: at this point, Max might as well just have WHORE tattooed on her forehead and Caroline  WAS RICH AND SLUTTY ONCE. They’d save us all a lot of time wondering if there was a point to any of this crap.

Grade: F

Other thoughts/observations:

– one episode left! That is all – I’d rather just not think about this episode any more than I have to.
