Review: 2 Broke Girls 'And the Extra Work' - Funk And Skank

And The Extra Work

Tonight’s review of 2 Broke Girls will be a short one. Why? After 22 episodes of this nonsense, there just isn’t much left to say that I haven’t already said multiple times. But in the sake of keeping up my promise of reviewing every episode this season (save for the ones I missed moving across the country), I’ll share a few thoughts on tonight’s latest stinker, ‘And the Extra Work’.

‘Work’ is really a loose term for it: the girls don’t really do any work to earn the money for Chestnut’s new shoe job (was anybody else hoping Chestnut would just enter the apartment and tip over dead?), instead exploiting a convenient director who wanted to have a threesome with them. In a way, the episode tries to be a parody of ‘Hollywood’ life, but it’s musings on the topics don’t go past “every guy is a disgusting molester” and “Hollywood people stink”. Throw in two Kardashian jokes, two ounces of Max making references to ejaculations in/around/on her body, and you’ve got this week’s episode of 2 Broke Girls on ice.

Han’s presence is also quite odd in the episode. Essentially, he blackmails the production company into paying for all sorts of shit around his restaurant… but why? They don’t even bother to give Han an excuse to justify him ripping off the company. None whatsoever – he all of a sudden starts to tally up things to charge the company for, but never explains why. Does he need money for something? Is he broke from spending it on something? Most likely it’s because he’s Asian – either that or because he’s short… those are the only two lines of jokes they have for his character.

There have been a few attempts at doing something with Caroline’s character this season, but as tonight episode clearly points out, the show’s lost all direction with Max. She’s just a sounding board for three lines of jokes: “my mother hates me”, “I probably have multiple STD’s” or their favorite, “I’m a big fucking whore, and I love it.” Even in this episode, Max is trying to do something for her horse – Max is just around because she’s a big Law and Order: SVU fan (another unattractive quality) and presumably enjoys violence against women (we know she likes it when its directed towards her, being proud of her various activities and being shot twice).

Unintentionally, this second season of 2 Broke Girls has been about two stories: how Max is the worst person ever, who’ll keep Caroline from ever escaping the “poor world” (aka reality); and how the two of these girls really aren’t great friends at all, something this episode highlights when the two of them fight over who gets to be the featured dead waitress.

On the bright side? There’s only two episodes of the season left!

Grade: F

Other thoughts/observations:

– the empty misogynist director realizes they’ve already killed one of the actresses – so of course, he looks for another woman to kill. Nothing like replacing violence against women with violence against women!

– Oleg was on the Ukranian Big Brother once, a reality show titled ‘People Who Live In Ukraine.’ This would be a good joke, had the payoff not been so lazily executed by the writers.

– Caroline couldn’t afford a massage, so she let herself get molested on the subway. It’s all good!

– this is admittedly the most arrogant thing I’ve ever said, but I honestly think I put more efforts into these reviews sometimes than the writers do with the scripts. That’s sad.

  1. It’s an almost inspiring train wreck of network tv and is continually aspiring in how awful it countinues to become.

  2. Also, it’s not arrogant that you assume you put more effort into your reviews… It’s true. Trust me.

  3. I love this show but I wholeheartedly agreed with your review this week. Not impressed at all.
