Review: Archer 'Coyote Lovely' - Share The Goddamn Doritos

archer s4 ep8

Just a few quick thoughts on tonight’s Archer:

The reason Archer can do bad guy of the week material without feeling repetitive and formulaic is because said baddies are always so well-defined. And while ‘Coyote Lovely’ has plenty of hilarious moments, it doesn’t quite work as well as other episodes because Moreno isn’t much of a character. Archer’s attraction to his target is spot on (as is Moreno being used in a honey pot scheme by Malory), but it doesn’t ever really materialize into anything interesting.

It doesn’t make it a bad episode, though – ‘Coyote Lovely’ is a solid episode of the show regardless, most of it spent while Archer suffered another life-threatening injury that isn’t so life threatening. There’s a lot of talk about immigration policies, Dayton Callie voicing a wasted non-licensed veterinarian, and a food-hogging, machine-gun toting Mexican named Lupe that Archer befriends – and although it doesn’t culminate in anything memorable, it’s hardly unwatchable.

Grade: B

Other thoughts/observations:

– Cyril’s bruised chest was great – highlighted when Pam pokes him in the chest and he cripples to the floor.

– Did the border patrol guys need to be gay?

– The suggestion Archer might have a form of autism is an interesting idea.

– “Turns out he’s some kind of spook.” “Hey! He’s right here… don’t worry, you’re beautiful!”

– Why is ‘DOM’ written on the rock Archer is sitting next to with his sniper rifle?

– “What? Nothing… I’m just a…. hologram! Zzzzzzzzttt!”

– Apparently you get 6 freebies with concussions… I’m surprised Roger Goodell hasn’t quoted that line yet.

– when Pam smacks Cheryl, she randomly yells out “Flavor of Love!”, reminding me why I love her so much.

– I can’t remember the line exactly, but Moreno says something about how she can seduce Archer because she’s “no Ray Gillette.”

  1. “Dom” is a reference to the old Kevin Costner movie Fandango. I don’t want to spoil it for you because it’s a really good movie. I think maybe 1% of people that watched the episode got that reference…

  2. Moreno’s comment about Ray Gillette was something about “lucky they didn’t send Ray Gilette” (otherwise she couldn’t pull off the honeypot).

I nearly died laughing when Moreno was about to deliver a one-liner and instead said, in Spanish, “wait, I totally had something for this.” She and Archer were made for each other.
